The study focused on assessing current and future traffic conditions, identifying origin–destination movement patterns, and forecasting passenger and freight traffic demand within Muscat Governorate and North Al Sharqiyah Governorate. A key objective of the study was to evaluate the traffic diversion potential from existing routes, particularly the current Al Aqaba mountain road, to the proposed new corridors. The assessment considered reductions in travel distance, journey time, congestion, and vehicle operating costs, while improving reliability, safety, and network resilience. The findings supported decisions on alignments, lane configuration, tunnel capacity, and interchange layouts under OHDS 2017 and international best practice. Axiom was engaged to undertake a comprehensive traffic study for the Boshar–Al Amirat Tunnel Road and the Al Amirat–Dima wa Al Tayiyyin Road, supporting informed planning, design, financing, and operational decisions under a DBFOT framework. The study focused on assessing current and future traffic conditions, identifying origin–destination movement patterns, and forecasting passenger and freight traffic demand within Muscat Governorate and North Al Sharqiyah Governorate.

A key objective of the study was to evaluate the traffic diversion potential from existing routes, particularly the current Al Aqaba mountain road, to the proposed new corridors. The assessment considered potential reductions in travel distance, journey time, congestion, and vehicle operating costs, while improving reliability, safety, and network resilience. The findings were intended to support decisions on optimal alignments, cross-sections, lane configurations, tunnel capacity, and interchange layouts in accordance with Oman Highway Design Standards (OHDS 2017) and relevant international best practices.
